What Tools do I need for the Flowpex Piping System?

Flowpex piping system has one type of crimp fitting for all applications therefore one type of hand crimping tool is available with four different crimping heads 16mm-20mm-26mm-32mm. A hand reamer/gauging tool is available and must be used after the cutting of the pipe. Internal bending springs in all sizes are also available.

How long does Flowpex last?

Artificial ageing tests carried out within the laboratory calculate pipe life at more than 50 years!

Can you use other tabling charts for pipe sizing when using Flowpex for gas connections?

No. Flowpex gas sizing tables are included in our Flowpex Installation manual. They are specific to the Flowpex system.
The reason for the difference in sizing between Flowpex and copper is in the fact that the Flowpex fittings are internal as opposed to external for copper.
However, Flowpex has less co-efficient of friction than copper with improved lamina gas flow and no boundary effect, meaning apart from the fitting restrictions, the Flowpex pipe when tested was found to be far superior to copper with no measurable pressure drop over 50 metres.

Is the Flowpex system included in AS 5601-2004?

Yes.  As Flowpex is compliant with AS 4176:1994 it is referenced in AS 5601 Table 3.1 on page 33.

Can the Flowpex piping system be used for the carriage of hot & cold potable water?

Yes, Flowpex complies with AS 4176:1994. Flowpex solves many problems associated with metal and other types of plastic pipes. It will not erode, corrode, scale or contaminate the water.

Are Flowpex fittings interchangeable with gas & water Installations?

Yes, all Flowpex fittings are the same for hot & cold water, natural gas, LPG and compressed air applications. One DR brass crimped fitting for all applications, just think of the advantages.

Can you use Flowpex with other similar systems?

Definitely not.  Under no circumstances can Flowpex pipe or fittings be crimped to other similar systems.

The following is an extract from Regulation Roundup Bulletin, issue 17, April 2006.  Office of the Technical Regulator S.A.

Extensions to composite pipe systems.

”If you decide to use a particular composite system for gas installations you are strongly encouraged to provide a BSP threaded fitting, in an accessible location to allow for any future extensions by another gasfitter. In this way you provide a safe means whereby an extension to the gas supply, using an alternative composite system, steel or copper can be done. Remember it may be you looking for this fitting”.

What is the temperature and pressure rating for the Flowpex system?

For water applications: 1400kpa
For gas applications: 70kpa @ 80° C

For gas installations above 70kpa a written request can be made to the particular State Regulator for his consideration. He may then issue an exemption notice for that request.

Can I use Flowpex above ground and exposed to sunlight?

Yes, as Flowpex pipe is black it can be used where it is exposed to direct sunlight.

The following is an extract from the Forward on page 4 of AS 4176-1994 which states:
“Polyethylene or cross-linked polyethylene macro-composite pipes which are either natural or of colours other than black are not suitable for use or extended storage where exposed to direct sunlight”.
So if you have installations that will be exposed to direct sunlight, think of none other than the Flowpex system.

What is the minium distance between pipe fixings?

16mm pipe size-fixings to be 1.00 metres apart
20mm pipe size-fixings to be 1.25 metres apart
26mm pipe size-fixings to be 1.50 metres apart
32mm pipe size-fixings to be 2.00 metres apart

These figures were extracted from AS 5601-2004 Gas Installation- 4.3.2
Spacing of supporting devices on page 43-The spacing of supporting devices shall not exceed those given in Table 4.2 on page 44.

The minium spacing for fixing of composite pipe is not contained in AS 3500.1:2003 Table 5.2 on page 40 so it is recommended that the above data be adopted.

Flowpex will not sag between fixings and always look neat and tidy. Flowpex do not manufacture fixings for the Flowpex system as all existing fixings will suit the Flowpex pipe.

Can I bend Flowpex manually without the aid of a pipe-bender?

Yes, Flowpex pipe is very flexible and in the smaller diameter pipes bending can be done by hand. However, when bending large diameter pipes or when a very small radius is required, the use of internal springs is recommended.

Is there a need to support a bend in the Flowpex pipe?

Bend supports are necessary with other systems but not for Flowpex.  Once the bend has been made it will stay in place unsupported.

Can I fit the Flowpex system to an existing copper installation

Yes. Flowpex to copper flared connectors have been manufactured in 16mm & 20mm sizes. Simply cut the copper pipe—place the flared nut onto the pipe-flare the pipe then tighten the flared nut to the fitting body. For sizes above 20mm refer to our fitting range contained in the Installer’s Manual.

Can Flowpex be used for the last connection in a gas installation?

Not at this stage. In AS 5601-2004 Gas Installations on page 33 Table 3.1 states that composite pipe is not permitted for use in a final connection to an appliance. Typically you would run Flowpex to a gas cock, for a cooker or heater and make your final connection using an approved connector. When connecting instantaneous hot water heaters, Flowpex can be installed to the gas cock then a union to the heater-the union is the final connection in this case.

After cutting Flowpex pipe is it necessary to use the reamer/gauging tool every time?

Yes, it is necessary to remove the burred edge after the cutting of the pipe. This will assist in the assembly of the joint and avoid potential damage or dislodgement of the O-rings. The use of the reamer/gauging tool will comply with the warranty requirements.

Can Flowpex be connected directly to the gas meter?

Yes. Gas meters vary from State to State so the connection to the meter could be male or female, in any case we have several fittings in our range that will allow for a direct connection to the meter.

Are the threads on the Flowpex fittings different to other systems?

All threads on Flowpex fittings either male or female are BSP threads which is a universal thread. The threads on all of our male fittings are tapered and therefore comply with requirements contained in AS 5601 3.2.3 Prohibited fittings on page 25 (running/parallel thread).

In what length is Flowpex pipe available?

16mm & 20mm pipe is available in 100 metre coils.
26mm & 32mm pipe is available in 50 metre coils.

Can I bury Flowpex pipe and fittings in the ground?

Yes, all Flowpex fittings are made of DR (dezincification resistant) brass. There is no need to wrap fittings with an approved material when direct burring in the ground.

What depth of cover is required for a gas installation using Flowpex?

The minimum depth of cover is 450mm in accordance with AS 5601-2004 Table 4.5 on page 56.

Can Flowpex pipes be chased in masonry floor/walls?

Yes, Flowpex piping can be chased in masonry floors, walls with no further protection of the pipe necessary.

Can Flowpex gas pipes be buried in concrete?

Yes, without joints with the pressure not to exceed 7kpa and the pipe to be placed between the top and bottom layers of reinforcement. Refer to AS 5601-2004 4.10.22 page 58

Can Flowpex be installed beneath a building in the ground for a gas installation?

Yes it can, as long as there are no joints. Don’t forget Flowpex is available in 50-100m coils. Refer to AS 5601-2004 4.10.19 on  page 57.

Can Flowpex gas pipe be installed in concealed locations such as duct, voids etc?

Yes it can, with joints kept to a minium as per Table 4.6 on page 57 in AS 5601-1994. Out crimped Dr brass joints are classed as permanent joints as defined in AS 5601 1.4.86 on page 17.

Do I need to use grommets when running Flowpex piping through metal studded walls?

The use of grommets is not required as the outer layer of Flowpex acts as an insulator in itself. There are saddling clips available that sit in the hole of the metal frame which allows the pipe to pass through them.

Will Flowpex help with water hammer?

Yes, using Flowpex will eliminate water hammer as the pipe moves and absorbs the shock of sudden shut off commonly associated with copper pipe installations.
